In 'Ghost Of Old Highways' a man pursued by an invading army hunts down previous versions of himself amidst the purgatory of a fractured consciousness. The experiential short film is driven by an original score from the artist Lovett, whose song of the same name inspired the script from director Dan Bush. Shot on location deep in the North Carolina mountains, the surreal narrative is set against the distorted dreamscape of the Civil War, a time when this country had turned against itself and into its own worst enemy. The film explores the identity of the hero in the collective American psyche and the inherent struggle within to reconcile the choices one must make while being chased by the ghost of past ones.

HIGHWAYS OF AGONY is another highway horrorshow classic by the genre's founder, former accountant and crime scene buttinsky Richard Wayman (and produced by Earle Deems). Specializing in educational films targeted at teenagers and schoolchildren, Wayman's Highway Safety Films were known for their voyeuristic scenes of automotive carnage in full color along with ghoulish, almost vindictive narration (here by Wayne Byers) that seems to delight at the idea of "careless" drivers paying for their distraction with their lives. Unlike Wayman's earlier SIGNAL 30, HIGHWAYS OF AGONY features a foreboding organ soundtrack as well as brief dramatizations to set-up for scenes of unflinching roadway atrocities. Readers of Ralph Nader's UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED may note a "leading candidate for the unsafest car title" Chevrolet Corvair among the wreckages. - Tom Fritsche

Although ostensibly the grand-son of the legendary hero, Clayton Moore's Ken Mason is little more than a cowboy in a black mask in this 12 chapter Republic serial. Mason, the head of the telegraph line work crew, assumes his ancestor's trade-mark mask (but not whip) in order to prevent a local czar (Roy Barcroft) from sabotaging the burgeoning telegraph line. Pamela Blake, a brunette starlet formerly known as Adele Pearce, played Mason's imperiled girlfriend, and the serial also benefitted from the usual competent work of Republic's great stunt-performers, including Dale van Sickel, Tom Steele, Eddie Parker, and Joe Yrigoyen.

Talfryn becomes infatuated with the lake visiting daily but doesn't see anything as magical as he did that day. What he doesn't realise is, he was also being watched from beneath the waters. The fairy princess of the lake falls in love with the farmer. Breaking her people's rules, she allows Talfryn to see her, he instantly falls in love but he doesn't understand why she wont tell him her name or even come out of the waters to talk to him. After a visit from his neighbor Mrs Williams, he reluctantly confides in her thinking she will laugh at him as did his fellow farmers, to his surprise Mrs Williams believes in the old folk tale and further more tells him secrets on how to catch the fairy maiden.

Too bad the local sheriff isn't quick to forgive in this family drama co-starring, Diane Ladd, Rachel Hunter and John Savage.
